Tampere is the largest town in the Scandinavian interior, and Finland's third largest urban area. It is situated on an isthmus flanked by two huge lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, which are linked by rapids that run through the city. It is an agreeable, open plan town, with lakeside parks providing plenty of fresh air. It is also a major centre for culture and tourism: its rich modern art museum, national Romantic-style cathedral and some fine 20C architectural feats are worth seeing.
