The historic capital of the dukes of Britanny, Nantes is both a town of art, a great industrial centre and a university town. The port, shared with Donges and Saint-Nazaire, covers the Loire estuary. Aside from shipbuilding and agroalimentary production, the local industry excels in its particular sectors. A far cry from the «ebony» that made the town so prosperous under the Ancien Régime and gave it its current face.
