Kastoriá lies on the neck of a peninsula jutting out into the picturesque waters of a lake. The charm of the old houses and numerous Byzantine churches has not been overwhelmed by its modern buildings. The churches - some are tiny - which are beautifully decorated with frescoes and sculptures were built by rich local families or by officials exiled from Constantinople to Kastoriá, a town which has prided itself for 500 to 600 years on being a fur trade centre.
