What vestiges remain of “Little Vienna”, Bulgaria’s largest town in 1878? Its merchant class, rich from trade with the capital, built ostentatious houses in the eclectic style of the age, intellectuals put the world to rights in the Viennese-style cafés, and its smart set sported the latest styles from Paris. Today, all that seems a long way away for visitors to the city, the centre of which is laid out in a star plan around Svoboda Square.
