In the 11C Ålborg was a well-established Viking port with a fishing fleet and regular trade links with Norway. Occupying a convenient position at the narrowest point of Limfjorden, it is now Denmark's fourth largest city and the main economic and cultural centre of north Jutland. Industrialisation and the advent of the railways in the 19C contributed to making the place what it is today. Ålborg owes much of its fame to its dynamism and avant-gardism, symbolised so well by its splendid Museum of Modern Art.
