The merger of two fishing villages formed Aberdeen; an Episcopal City around the cathedral and a commercial city happened in the shadow of the fortified castle in the 13C. In the 19C the expansion of the town, the undertaking of an urbanisation plan and the use of the local granite earned the City its name of Granite City. The maritime calling of the city has never been forgotten even if, today, the activities related to offshore oil exploration have taken the place of shipbuilding and fishing.
