Take the Maria-Theresien-Strasse to approach Innsbruck city centre. By widening and taking the shape of an elongated square, it offers you a spectacular view of the Old Town, with the Nordkette in the background, and its steep and wooded slopes, leading to rocky and often snow-capped peaks. From 600 m, you reach an altitude of 2,334 m up there. The all-white St. Anne Column stands in the middle of the street, flanked on both sides by buildings from various periods, including several palaces with fine 17th and 18th-century façades. For example, you'll find the Altes Landhaus at n° 43, which houses the Tyrol Government and Parliament. If you enter the Old Town via the Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse, lined with arcades and shops, you can see, in its axis, the very photogenic Little Golden Roof, which, in a way, is the city's symbol. Pedestrian streets squeeze between narrow and tall colourful houses, typical of mountain towns, in a maze that runs to the river and around St. James Cathedral. The houses, whose balconies try to catch the sunlight, make up a living and colourful painting with their stuccoes, frescoes and signs. There are numerous curiosities. Near the River Inn, the historical Eagle Inn is proud of the illustrious guests that use its premises since the 16th century. The Hofburg, the former duke's palace, was built against the Cathedral and is adjacent to the Hofkirche, with its amazing Mausoleum of Emperor Maximilian I and next to that, one of Europe's finest museums, the Folklore Museum.
