The first Salzburg Festival was inaugurated in 1920, on the initiative of three great creators in their respective fields; the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the musician Richard Strauss and film director Max Reinhardt. It was created in honour of Mozart, even if it has also always been dedicated to other composers. The Festival is also the result of the particularly rich heritage of a city dedicated to music, within the Baroque and fastuous setting of its archbishops' court. The greatest conductors have attended it, such as Bruno Walter, Toscanini, W. Furtwängler, Karl Böhm or Herbert von Karajan. An Easter Festival and Whitsun concerts were added to the traditional Summer Festival held from the end of July until the end of August. Operas, concerts and ballets are held in the former princes' stables, rebuilt in 1960, according to the architect Clemens Holzmeister's plans. The latter are now called Grosses Festspielhaus, or Festival Hall, partly cut into the Mönschsberg mountain. There is the Kleines Festspielhaus or Small Festival Hall next to it, laid out in the former Winter Riding School. Concerts are also given next door, in the former Summer Riding School or Rocks School (Felsenreitschule), and its famous arches cut into the rock. There are also various other Festival sites, such as the Residence Courtyard and, on the opposite bank of the Salzach, the Mozarteum and Landestheater. Since 1992, the Festival has opened up to contemporary music and theatre and remains one of the world's top musical events.
