This beautifully displayed collection in a wing of the Zwinger is one of the best of its kind in the world. It was built by Augustus the Strong and his successor Augustus III. The most important masters from the Italian Renaissance and the Baroque period as well as Dutch and Flemish painters from the 17C are represented. The various periods are displayed on different coloured backgrounds: Italian on red, Flemish and Dutch on green and Spanish and French on blue. Among the masterpieces on display are works by Canaletto, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, Silvestre, Rembrandt, Rubens, Cranach the Elder, Dürer, Lorrain, Poussin, Veronese, Tintoret, Raphaël, Botticelli, Watteau, Tiepolo, El Greco and Murillo, to name but a few. The collection is spread over three floors and more than merits a visit, as much for the wonderful setting as for the quality of the paintings themselves.
