The abbey, founded in the 11C, was taken over by the Premonstratensian Order, who then gave it up in 1632 during the Thirty Years War. The abbey was then used as a seminary and school until 1945. Since 1974 it has been an art museum, with an interesting collection of sculpture from antiquity to the present day in a triple vault. The triple-aisled and Gothic vaulted abbey church, built between 1220 and 1240, has for its part been a concert venue since 1977. The hall crypt, beneath the chancel and also with three aisles, is the oldest part of the church. The cloister is particularly harmonious in style. The lavabo with its conical stone roof is thought to be one of the oldest of its kind in Germany.
