The building of the Cathedral began in 1227 at the instigation of Saint Ferdinand III and was finished at the end of the 15C. The length of the work meant that the present-day Cathedral features all the stages of Spanish Gothic. The interior of the building contains a mass of magnificent decorations, rooms and objects to be admired. Note first of all the remarkable set of stained glass windows which line the bays, or even the magnificent railings which enclose the coro and the choir. The latter contains a huge altarpiece of impressive dimensions sculpted in the flamboyant style. As for the coro, it contains magnificent 15C and 16C stalls in wood and alabaster. In the chapter house, you will most certainly appreciate the fine polychrome Mudéjar ceiling. But the tour does not end there - more wonders await you. Displayed in the sacristy is an important collection of canvases by El Greco, notably El Expolio. Then the treasury will probably attract you as it houses the splendid 16C silver-gilt monstrance by Enrique de Arfe. Before leaving, stop for a few moments in the Mozarab Chapel located beneath the dome, or even in the cloister to look at the fresco-covered walls.
