This picturesque area, with its wooden houses high up on the crest of Pyynikki between two lakes, grew up at the beginning of the 20C when workers' families built their little houses on available patches of land. The summit of the crest affords an impressive panorama. Pyynikki summer theatre, opened in 1959 in the park of the same name, was the first in the world that was equipped with a turning auditorium.
