The amphitheatre at Nimes slightly precede the Christian era, dating back to the reign of Augustus, around 80 years older than the amphitheatre at Arles. These are the best preserved Roman arenas in europe, and could once seat 24,000 people. From the exterior, the amphitheatre has two levels of 60 arcades topped with an attic. Inside, the four levels of seats in the amphitheatre show how seating was arranged by social status.
