Many paintings from the Italian school dating from the 14th C. are on display here. Amongst the vast European collection are works by Rembrandt and the famous painting by Lucas Cranach of the Nymph at the fountain. The British school is comprehensively represented, from the portraits of the Elizabethan era to the important works of Stubbs, Wright of Derby and Richard Wilson. There are also foreign canvases to see, by Fuseli in particular and many Pre-Raphaelites including Lorenzo, Isabella de Millais, Ford Madox Brown, in addition to narrative paintings such as those by W.R. Yeames.
A small number of French impressionist paintings are also on show alongside their British contemporaries such as Sickert. The modern collection of British artists is extremely interesting: artists from the Camden Town school, Lucian Freud, Paul Nash...
