In 1761, the industrialist Matthew Boulton purchased this Georgian building which towered over his factory. He hired architects James and Samuel Wyatt to convert the plant into a technological wonder of the period, giving it central heating, metal windows, toilets that flushed and running hot and cold water. The house was completed refurbished later eventually becoming a museum dedicated to Matthew Boulton and his progressive contemporaries.
