The building, constructed under Charles of Bourbon in 1737 has an austere neo-classical façade that was added in 1816. This apparent austerity actually conceals an interior of incredible wealth. The oldest opera in Italy is in fact entirely decorated with stucco, gilded wood and red velvet. It has an audience capacity of 3,000 on six floors and is renowned for its perfect acoustics and the quality of its performances.
