Basilica of St Vitus

This architectural masterpiece was consecrated in 547 by the archbishop Maximian and coveys the ostentatious taste and research into light in the later ancient arts. The richness of the interior decoration leaves one dumbstruck: marbles, beautifully sculpted Byzantine capitals, frescoes and mosaics in the apse. Theodora (looking stern) and Justinian are depicted with the hieratical style typical of Byzantine art. The ensemble is quite marvellous and should not be missed.
