This is the sumptuous setting for the Summer Festival spectacles at Verona which, like before, attract huge crowds to the amphitheatre. Of course, the spectacles of today are somewhat less bloody than those of yesteryear, when gladiators confronted each other in front of 25 000 spectators who had taken over the tiers of seats in this edifice from the end of the 1C, but they are just as tragic!
