Saint-Denis Basilica The necropolis of the kings of France since Dagobert Ist, the first to be inhumed here circa 639, this church is a monument of funerary art, unique in Europe. The present basilica is one of the first Gothic churches since it dates back to the beginning of the 12th century. It underwent damage at the time of the Revolution and many tombs were violated, but Alexandre Lenoir, a member of the Monuments Board, placed the most precious tombs in a safe place. After a first restoration at the time of Napoleon, the necropolis was reconstituted from 1816 on and the remains of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were transferred here.
