  Relais Royal Four stars

In the heart of the Cathar region, in the small medieval town of Mirepoix, a special residence, built in 1742, has been turned into a delightful setting for a stay of the finest order. Restored with great attention to detail and taste, the Relais Royal has maintained its historic elegance: interior courtyard, terracotta floors, wooden French-style ceilings, garden and swimming pool. Tasty cuisine featuring regional products.

+Pros

Gerwin, Roger and their dog, Tupee. What a team! This is a truly wonderful hotel for a relaxing and romantic interlude. The hotel is located towards the centre of Mirepoix and parking can be difficult in this medieval town. However, Gerwin is only too happy to whisk your car off to secure parking should you so wish. This is symptomatic of the attention to detail exemplified by the two friends. The map on the hotel website could, however, do with an upgrade! Our room, on the top floor, was a large suite, being well presented and very clean. Quality was apparent in the linens and towels and with there being no less than 2 flat screen televisions. Unusually, there was no turn down service in the evenings. Free soft drinks and the like were on offer which was much appreciated given the very reasonable room rates. The same applies to the free Wi-Fi service which worked out of the box. Beware, the swimming pool is more of a plunge than a swim. It is clear that there has been some trimming down of staff with Roger, now the Chef de cuisine, and Gerwin as front of house, being very hands on. A novel approach to dining was Roger serving some plates himself, despite being in the middle of service. The wine service by Gerwin was slightly unusual and rather confusing. This could do with some improvement. Roger's cooking was exceptional, given his relatively new role as Chef de cuisine. Only one error in the whole time that we stayed and this a simple matter of timing that was easily put right. One hopes that a Michelin 'Bib' is not too far distant as it would be throughly deserved. Having stayed at many 5 star hotels throughout the UK and Europe, this is a true gem that punches well above its weight. Go as soon as you can and you will not be disappointed.
