Housed in a former fast food joint on busy 87th Street, Al Bawadi Grill doesn't exactly shout "peaceful oasis," but the owners have done a lot with what they've got. Water fountains, faux palm trees, and etched glass set the scene for the kind, hospitable service. A colorful pile of pickled vegetables as well as a smoky eggplant salad are brought to the table for diners to enjoy while they peruse the grill-centric menu. Hummus is velvety and artfully presented, dotted with olive oil, chilies, and sumac accompanied by warm pita. The Al Bawadi mixed grill includes three kinds of kebabs-shish, kefta, and chicken-accompanied by grilled onion, tomato, and two styles of rice. Wash it all down with a freshly squeezed juice or smoothie.
