Miles away from anything other than vineyards and forest, this quaint two-story farmhouse restaurant lives amid eight small cottages. The dining room is painted yellow and olive, hung with intricate iron chandeliers, and decorated with a flowing mural border depicting country life. Casually dressed young couples and families relax and take in the ambience. The menu of local and seasonal products changes frequently, yet the flavors in each dish always make sense without being overly complicated. Expect such first courses as house-made pillows of pasta holding enticingly salty Taleggio in an aromatic truffled beurre blanc with celery, green apple, and black truffle shavings. Next may come a simple but robust and beautifully roasted guinea hen with confit leg, squash bread pudding, and hearty beans; or slices of elk tenderloin fanned over squash spaetzle, set in an archipelago of pickled huckleberries, squash brunoise, and mâche. There's bound to be a rich Valhrona chocolate dessert for a sweet finish. The aproned staff presents plates with synchronization, adding a traditional touch to the country feel. Intimate and comfortably warm, there is an aura of special occasion in the air.
