When you want a really good sandwich in East Durham, head straight for Ideal's, part sandwich shop, part market. Ian Bracken and Paul Chirico, who met while attending the Culinary Institute of America, prepare specialty sandwiches, baked goods and curated grocery items to an eager crowd (and eager they are—ten minutes after opening the line may be 20 people deep). Hot sandwiches include everything from egg and cheese on an English muffin and a chicken cutlet sandwich to fried eggplant with ricotta. Meanwhile, the cold section runs the gamut from prosciutto and mozzarella to roast turkey and more. Note: There is no indoor seating, with just two picnic tables outside.
