The Michelin Guide's review
Café Samabe is perfectly at home in the heart of Haarlem, occupying a handsome listed building on a corner plot. The historical façade gives way to an interior full of character that has retained the building's period charm. The lively bustle adds to the convivial café atmosphere alluded to by the restaurant's name. Authentic Indonesian cooking takes centre stage, with a clear emphasis on dishes from Bali. Choose from the extensive à la carte menu or one of the rijsttafels (medleys of dishes with rice), which are also available in vegetarian versions and for solo diners. The crispy samosa filled with shredded beef is irresistible, as is the satay ayam with tender chicken and a deeply flavoursome peanut sauce. Generous flavours, plenty of variety and exceptionally reasonable prices explain why diners keep coming back.
