The Michelin Guide's review
The imposing red sandstone citadel has been presiding over the old town since the 12C. It was remodelled several times, including by Vauban (17C). In the Great Underground Hall, video projections relate the history of the city and its fight for freedom. The former barracks house the History Museum and the Espace Bartholdi, which is dedicated to the sculptor and his pharaonic Lion of Belfort, situated lower down. From the terrace, there is a wonderful view over Alsace, the Vosges and the Jura.
