City and village
The Michelin Guide's review
Bryggen used to be the heart of the medieval town. Now this area along the quayside is home to a unique set of timber buildings whose architecture typifies the famous kontore established throughout northern Europe by the Hanseatic League. Painstakingly restored, standing in rows separated by narrow passages, these multi-purpose buildings painted red, ochre or white were used as homes, warehouses and workshops. Together they are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
