The Shaw Civil War Monument is a low-relief in bronze sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This memorial pays homage to Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and members of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the first regiment of free black volunteers, in the Civil War. Shaw was killed in 1863 during the Union assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina.
