Behind the museum, the Gardens of the Old Episcopal Palace are laid out on several staggered terraces and date back to the 17C. They form a charming ensemble, with their pruned hedges, flowerbeds, ornamental ponds and Baroque statues. An avenue skirts the Lago das Coroas (Lake of Crowns) and is lined with statues, the Apostles and Evangelists facing the Kings of Portugal. Note the irony in the way the sculptor depicted the Kings of Spain who ruled Portugal.
