Hué Citadel

Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
The citadel was built in 1805 during the reign of Emperor Gia Long, following a layout inspired by Vauban's fortifications. It has retained much of the purple and gold decor which contributed to its earlier splendour and is organised in concentric areas which surrounded the Imperial City and Forbidden Purple City at its centre. Protected by a canal and a 10km-long wall, the city covers an area of 520ha.
