The Michelin Guide's review
"The island of sweet secrets and feasts of the soul" inspired Watteau's famous18C The Embarkation for Cythera, which has little in common with the island's actual landscape. Cradle of Aphrodite, Cythera (or Kythira) has two faces: to the north, pine trees and moors; to the south, wild gorges covered in myrtle, bright-white villages with a unique architectural style, one of which is the capital Kythira Town, and solitary beaches to the west. The ruins of Paliohora bear witness to bygone greatness and are worth seeing.
