The Michelin Guide's review
Built by Henri Espérandieu in the mid-19C at the city's highest point (154m), this Romanesque-Byzantine basilica affords unrivalled views over the whole of Marseille. Its 60m bell tower is crowned by the famous gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, known as the "Good Mother", while inside the building numerous ex-votos evoke sailors, illnesses and wars, as well as the city's football team, Olympique de Marseille. The crypt is home to a beautiful marble Mater dolorosa sculpted by Carpeaux.
