Nikko Kanaya Hotel

Michelin Guide
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
The new Kanaya Hotel succeeded the original establishment on the opposite shore in 1893. It combines Western style, in the main building, and Japanese style, in the annex known as the "Dragon Palace". By its outdated charm, its opulent interior replete with ornaments, it very quickly attracted foreign intellectuals and diplomats eager to escape the summer heat in Tokyo. During the Second World War, the emperor sought safety for his family here. American officers occupied it from 1945 to 1952. Many celebrities have stayed, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin.
