The Michelin Guide's review
Namahage Festival is well and truly alive and kicking in the Oga peninsula. On 31 December, the men of every village dressed in straw and wearing scary masks go to all the houses to see whether the children have been good over the previous year. As representatives of the mountain spirits, they bring good luck for the new year. The museum is full of information about this ritual and boasts a wonderful collection of masks. The adjacent Folklore museum offers the chance to witness a visit of the Namahage.
