The Michelin Guide's review
Rising amidst sugar cane plantations, the fortress of Paramonga (1000 CE) is an amazing pyramidal 3-level structure on which subsist the remains of older buildings. The edifice was built by the Chimú for a defensive purpose on a strategic location (go up to the summit and admire the sweeping panorama), and then served as a place of worship for the Incas after they had conquered the region.
