This area of the Villa Romana del Casale was originally a gymnasium. The mosaic decoration reproduces the setting of a circus that has been identified as Rome's Circus Maximus. The theme illustrated here is the quadriga race that closed the festivities held in honour of Ceres, goddess of the harvests. The guest rooms open onto the southern side of the peristyle. You enter through a vestibule decorated with a mosaic.
