The Michelin Guide's review
Whether for reasons of privacy or security, Alexander VI Borgia wanted to be able to make his way from the Vatican to the Castel Sant' Angelo hidden from the gaze of prying eyes. He therefore had this passage - known as the "passetto" - built along the wall (built by Leo IV from 847-855) linking the two buildings. This passageway allowed the popes access to their fortress in times of siege.
