The Michelin Guide's review
The Salado Indians lived along the Salt River from 1150 to 1450. Well preserved by a large alcove, the lower ruins of the Tonto National Monument, accessible along a 2,600ft/800m paved path, rise 328ft/100m above the Visitor Center. This outstanding site features several enclosures in a village that used to contain some twenty rooms clinging to the wall of the grotto. Inside a few beams and sooty marks bear witness to ancient hearthplaces.
