Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
The façade of this church, illuminated by white light bulbs in the evening, can be seen from afar, perched on the Colina Sagrada (Sacred Hill). The church (1754) is a strong symbol of the religious syncretism of Bahians. Attend mass on Friday, a day attributed to Oxalá, god of Creation; the entire congregation is dressed in white, colour of Orixá. The church also houses one of Salvador's most beautiful religious festivals, the Lavagem do Bonfim. Inside, a room brimming with commemorative plaques is testament to the fervour of the people's devotion to the patron saint of Bahia.
