The Michelin Guide's review
If there is one site you shouldn't miss in Samarkand, it is surely this. Set out around the tomb of a saint who came here to convert the nomads to Islam, great numbers of Timurid nobles and dignitaries had prestigious mausoleums built on either side of a path climbing up to the Afrasiab hills, the original site of Samarkand. Be sure to visit at the end of the day, when the low-angled lights show off the glazed bricks and ceramic decorations of the façades and portals to great effect.
