The Michelin Guide's review
This is the highest point of the island of Madeira. Pico Ruivo, which peaks at 1 862m, presents slopes planted with giant heathers and offers an incomparable panoramic view from its summit. Several paths lead to the refuge; the Pico do Ariero route is the most spectacular but also the longest and really only for experienced hikers; the climb up the Achada do Teixeira is much easier and quicker.
