The statue of Walter Scott, sheriff of Selkirk for 33 years, stands in the centre of the square on the spot of the former tolbooth's courtroom. The current courtroom exhibits, in addition to souvenirs of Scott himself, an audio-visual presentation devoted to his life and career.
