The Michelin Guide's review
The main feature of the Wat Mahatat, the Si Mahatat is a monumental chedi in the shape of a lotus bud and designed in the pure Sukhothai style. King Li Thai is said to have rebuilt it in order to house a hair and vertebra of Buddha brought back from Sri Lanka. The square base of the building comprises three levels: note the internal frieze made from stucco and decorated with a procession of walking monks. Marking the four cardinal points, the four brick corner towers frame the chedi, accompanied by laterite chapels built in the Khmer style.
