Like Montcada Street in Barcelona, the narrow, cobbled Carrer Cavallers was the main thoroughfare of medieval Tarragona. It is still lined with a few mansions which belonged to the wealthiest families of the town: Casa Castellarnau, today the Museu d'Historia, Casa Montoliu, home to the conservatory of music and the former palace of the Generalitat.
