The Michelin Guide's review
The Mercado Central, built between 1910 and 1928, is one of Europe's largest covered markets (8 000m²). This fine example of Modernist architecture has façades on different levels: a lower section of azulejos, large bay windows with stained-glass decoration, and varnished ceramics with a metallic glint above. Close to a thousand stalls along its aisles are the setting for frantic activity every morning, beneath a large cupola at its main intersection.
