Presided over by the imposing presidential residence that is the White House, this area under heavy surveillance has several manicured parks, a handful of museums and residential roads lined by elegant houses. Occupying a park of several hectares, the White House gives onto Pennsylvania Avenue. Its south portico dominates the Ellipse, the open greensward that functions as a ceremonial ground.
