The Michelin Guide's review
The latest memorial on the Mall (2011) in Washington, the gigantic statue (9m) that emerges from a block of white granite represents Martin Luther King Jr., advocate of non-violent resistance, who fought for the civil rights of Blacks in the United States, assassinated in Memphis in 1968. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, whose face was sculpted by Chinese artist Lei Yixin, contemplates the Tidal Basin and the cherry blossoms. A few MLK quotations feature on the monument, nicknamed the Stone of Hope.
