Set just below street level and down the block from its eldest sibling, Blue Ribbon Sushi is an inviting spot to watch the masters at work. A sushi bar dominates the space, with colorful sake bottles and premium spirits on display. The low, wood-covered ceilings and polished tables provide an intimate setting, while the counter is a prime perch for a solo diner. The staff may point to Americanized options, but it’s best to trust the expert chefs and go with the omakase. The menu divides itself into Taiheiyo (“Pacific”) offerings, like the kohada, spotted sardine or a sweet and briny giant clam; and Taiseiyo (“Atlantic”), perhaps featuring fluke fin or a spicy lobster knuckle. Maki tempts with the karai kaibashire, with spicy minced scallop and smelt roe.
