Before setting foot inside this far-west and well-loved Italian institution in SoHo, know that you should save room for their desserts—imagine poached pears, tiramisu or a slice of their daily crostata. This is an important starting point, because there are plenty of other wonderful dishes vying for your attention along the way. Regional specialties include Sicilian veal and beef meatballs with raisins and pine nuts in an excellent tomato sauce. Many also come here for the pastas, like ricotta cavatelli with wilted arugula and smoky bacon cubes. A front row seat at the oyster bar is just as rewarding. The interior is something of a love letter to Sophia Loren-maybe as an attempt to remind us of the beauty in eating carbs? The location is equally iconic.
