Schokland
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

Once an elongated island in the Zuiderzee, Schokland formerly comprised three villages that were abandoned in 1859: because of its low altitude, it was difficult to defend the island against the sea. Behind the presbytery, part of the wooden palissade that protected the island from the sea has been preserved. Two steles on the walls of the church and presbytery show the water level reached during different periods of flooding.
