The Ancient Monastery of San Filippo is the city's most important religious monument. Dating from the late 18C, the church, decorated throughout with gilded stuccos, is home to a moving wooden crucifix by Fra'Umile da Petralia, a liturgical chancel in wood depicting scenes of the life of Saint Philip by Nicola Bagnasco (1818-22), and three panels of a 15C polyptych of a majestic Madonna surrounded by saints.
